Gender vs Ethnic Inequality

How far would sociologists agree that the problem of ethnic inequality has been reduced more than that of gender inequality in Britain over the past 40 years (12)

This is an opportunity for you to have your say.  Make a comment about the above question from a sociological point of view and then comment and argue with other people's ideas.

Good luck

Ethnic Minority's can be seen to have more rights than women. For example, America has never had a female president, however they do have black president.

    1. This does not talk about our society, however if you do look at our society you will notice we have had a female prime minister (Margaret Thatcher).

    2. Just because there has never been a female president doesn't mean they have less rights someone from an ethnic minority, females have run for the canidacy (Hillary Clinton '08)but people chose Obama over her because he was a better canidate.

    3. We aren't looking at the right's of people, we are looking at their equality within society .. just saying.

    4. Their equality in society can be triggered by many things though. e.g their job

  2. Ethnic minorities have more rights than women as they are protected more by the law. For example sexism laws only apply to work situations where as racism laws apply to the streets aswell

    1. But the laws can't stop what people actually think or say. Blacks are still targeted more for stop and searches than whites, even though the laws state you shouldn't assume someone was criminal because of their race.

  3. Ethnic minorities are now more equally treated by society now-a-day's an example of this would be that there have now been law's put in place to stop discrimination and racism E.g Racial Discrimination Act (1975). This mean's that if you were to racially discriminate any person , negative sanctions will be put into place. This show's how we as a society have recognised the problem of racism and are trying to over-come this. However a criticism of this is that it does not stop people from being 'Privately' racist.

  4. Ethnic minorities have more rights than women because it is illegal to make a racist joke however it is not illegal to make a sexist joke even though it may be frowned upon by society.

    1. there is a law in place, but it does not stop people making comments

    2. you can change the law but it is impossible to change someone's opinion.

    3. As the two above have said, you can't change someone's opinion (legally anyway)

  5. Ethnic minorities are equal than gender, purely because there are laws stopping people discriminating about ethnic group, where there are very few rules about discriminating gender.

    1. Just because there are laws stopping people discriminating about ethnic groups does not mean that nobody still makes racial comments. There are still racists in the world no matter where you go and other ethnicities still have to deal with some racial comments.

  6. men can be seen to have more rights than ethnic minorities. e.g. 'Institutional racism' - black people are more likely to be stopped and searched by the police than white people.

    1. you state 'black people' when actually it is more likely to be black males that are stopped and searched than black females.

  7. Women have the issue of the glass ceiling, which means in theory they can't be promoted beyond a certain level in a corporate business. Women also have a higher unemployment rate than certain ethinc mirorities

  8. The Equal pay act (1970) made women earn the same money as men at work. The Li and Colleagues study however found that ethnic minorities were being paid less than white British. Therefore gender is more equal than differences in ethnicity

    1. CRITICISM: The Equal pay act also applies to ethnic minorities.....

    2. Though we might like to believe otherwise, sexism (the belief that one sex/gender deserves inferior treatment) is still rampant in workplaces across the United Kingdom. Some statistics estimate that about 72% of women workers have experienced sexist bullying at work, while 85% of women workers believe that there is a bias towards males in their workplaces. Though there are laws that protect women’s employment rights, there is still much that must be left up to individuals and companies in order to ensure that fair treatment is extended to all workers.

    3. But as shown ethnic minorities are more unemployed than White British showing that you can change the law but not people's minds when it comes to employment. Where as the gender unemployment has shown to be more equal. Focus on Ethnicity and Religion (ONS, 2006)

  9. Gender equality has improved more than ethnicity over the past fourty years, this is because the gender gap has closed. It has closed because women are able to do a wider range of jobs for the same pay as men. The equal pay act (1970) states that employers must pay women and men equal pay for the same job or a job of equal worth. However there is still some gender equality within the work place. This could be because women are less able to do physical jobs, for example, construction work.

  10. The anti-discrimination law against gender inequality came into effect in 1970 but the Race relations act only came in 1976 to outlaw Racsim. However this clearly hasn't eradicated Racism or sexism making them both equally minorities.

  11. Ethnic minority women have less rights than white women as the attitudes towards women in ethnic minorities are a lot worse than the attitudes towards women in white society

  12. That fact that laws have been put in to action, like sex discrimination act (1975), has meant that the gender gap has become a lot smaller and women gained more equality. Li et al study showed that in today's society, women are more likely has to have an equal education to men, statistics even show that females do better in school. This equality means that women have more equal life chances to men. For example, employers must pay women an equal salary to men for the same job and of jobs of equal worth. This means women are less likely to be working class than before.

    1. However it is very hard to prove that an employer has employed a male over a female based on the fact that they are a female. Holmes (2009) shows that men have more power in society than women.

  13. Men are seen to have more rights than women. Holmes 2009 supports this because they found that society still benefits men more than women. In addition to this, they also found society was controlled mainly by men.

However men have taken on more roles that women would usually do, such as childcare, house work. The gender gap has also been closed because male grooming is now seen in media as well as women's grooming. Men are becoming more feminine because they have over taken women as the biggest consumers of designer labels and jewellery.

    2. CRITICISM!!!!
Women have exactly the same rights as men, it is simply social opinion that is the main problem

  14. Holmes (2009) shows that society is controlled mainly by men who have power within politics and the workplace. It is also shown that men have bigger share of rewards for example wealth and status.

  15. gender equality has improved over the past 40 years, this is due to the gender gap closing, nowadays women are more able to go out and work and earn their own money. however women are still less able to do more physical jobs such as building work. men and women have to be paid the same amount, The equal pay act (1970) says that employers have to pay men and women the same amount for the same job.

  16. In most religions women are viewed as inferior and are treated worse than men. Most ethnic groups are considered equal within churches too

  17. Ethnic inequality has been reduced more than the inequality between genders. Ethnic minorities have been helped by the introduction of the Race Relations Act (1976), which outlaws indirect and direct discrimination socially and in the workplace. However, women still face a 'glass ceiling' in the workplace and are more likely to not be promoted to the highest positions.

    1. Just because there is a law against discrimination does not mean people obey them rules. There are still racists in society and in the workplace.

  18. Equality in ethnicity has improved as about 30-40 years ago, programmes and advertisements stereotyped, ethnic minorities, preferably black men as being violent and being criminals. This has improved as now-a-days there are a lot less stereotypical programmes etc.

  19. In some ethnic minorities, men and women are seen as being equal. This is supported by the Arapesh tribe. Research found out that in this tribe, both sexes were gentle and passive; women did the heavy carrying; the main tried to share the pains of childbirth. However, in our society men are still mainly seen as the labour worker whilst women are mainly seen as housewives. This doesn't necessarily mean that women have less rights, it just means roles of the gender have been reduced in certain societies.

  20. Schools are a lot more equal when it comes to gender in comparison to 40 years ago, it doesn't matter of a persons gender within what lessons you choose to take. Whereas 40 years ago it was male dominant within school/education and they seemed to have more choice than girls. This then shows that the 'Gender Gap' has narrowed within women's rights due to things such as the Sex and Discrimination Act and time within society become more forward and modern. On the other hand, ethnicity is also a problem within education for example teachers labelling students, due to their ethnicity. This leads to children of an ethnic group being treated differently in education, leading to them feeling un-confident which then leads to a self fuffilling prophecy due to discrimination from teachers, therefore inequality of ethnicity has not been reduced as much as the 'Gender Gap'.

  21. CRITICISM: There is hardly any sexism in school's either? Also a female teacher may feel more comfortable 'telling off' a male student than a female student.
